Droppin' Science: Critical Essays on Rap Music and Hip Hop Culture (Critical Perspectives on the Past)
Published in Paperback by Temple Univ Press (01 October, 1995)
Author: William Eric Perkins
Average review score:

A rather good book
Very interesting, with opinions that don't always duplicate what the last person said. I really enjoyed some of the essays of this book. It challenges white patriarchal assumptions about Black music, its relevance, and those who are trying to appropriate it for their own financial gain. Tricia Rose's book is also a good one.

A plethora of intellectual and dynamic thoughts on hip hop.
Droppin science is a collection of insightful essays from a variety of intellectuals about the social dynamics and history behind the music now known as hip-hop. Every hip-hop head or any music lover in general could benefit from this insightful collection. From the influences of the island cultures on rap to the history of dance, this book illuminates and expands the present discourse on rap. This is a book I will surely pass onto others in the hip-hop community.

Authors: Malcolm Gillis, Dwight H. Perkins, and Michael Roemer
Average review score:

Excellent book
This is one of the best books in economic development ever published. Written in plain english, so it's easy to understand, even for non-economics students. Highly recommended for graduate students, professors, and professionals interested in economic issues of developing countries.

Excellent ... But ... !!!
This is an excellent academic book ,but it needs updating in light of the recent global developments. Basically it is missing a detailed analysis of The spread and effects of Globalization. Maybe there is a new edition in print now ???

Four Stories by American Women: Life in the Iron Mills by Rebecca Harding Davis/Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman/Country of the Pointed
Published in Paperback by Penguin USA (Paper) (December, 1990)
Authors: Cynthia Wolff, Edith Wharton, and Sarah Orne Jewett
Average review score:

A wonderful look at some Early American Women's Lit.
Excellent choices. Highly recommended for your Womens Studies research or just for a pleasure read. I particularly love "The Yellow Wallpaper." A fascinating look in the shackled mind of stifled feminine creativity.

Inspired Reading
This book is inspirational as well as educational by transitioning between Romanticism and Realism. The work challenges the reader to decide whether it refers simply to the prospect of salvation for a man convicted of stealing. Also questions are raised that is it possible that through the naturalistic view that Hugh's theft he can be excused by his unfortunate environment and heredity. Davis is an insightful and thoughtful writer, and this book represents that.

From Beggar Boy to Prince
Published in Paperback by Xlibris Corporation (July, 2001)
Author: Allan T. Perkins
Average review score:

An excellent compilation of short stories with a lesson.
This is an easy to read story made up of several short stories that each offer a lesson. It would be a perfect bedtime book for a child, and it's an enjoyable and quick read for adults. Offers a great message...

From Beggar Boy to Prince
This book would be a pleasure to read for both children and adults. This story is about a poor beggar boy who goes from living in the street to having a life that must have seemed like a dream to him. He has many lessons to learn along the way and doesn't even realize that he is also teaching those around him the most important lessons.

I think this would be a great story to read to school classes, and I plan on giving this book to a friend to read to her fifth grade class. I am sure her students will enjoy it as much as I did. Recommended!

Fantastic Customer Service Book!
There are times when all of our customer support needs a little pick up. This book has a wonderfuly motivational tone for improving your response to your customers. This book is very enlighting in its stance that the reason for having a business is not to make money, but to serve your customer. This book is full of delightful stories, of both wins and losses with your customers. Farrell is extremely motivational in tone. The book reads easily, but leaves you with lasting impressions. This book is a must for all who deal with customers.

A Must Read for Anyone in Any Business!
I have read this book so many times, I know the great stories by heart! My previous company used videos of Mr. Farrell's public speaking engagements as part of our training on customer service. I no longer work directly with the public, but it will be useful no matter what profession you work in. Mr. Farrell also talks about how to motivate your employees and work as a team. Buy this book and pass it around to your employees. I guarantee your business will prosper!!!

A History of Modern Poetry
Published in Paperback by Harvard Univ Pr (September, 1976)
Author: David Perkins
Average review score:

Accessible to NonPoets
I love poetry. Books like "History of Modern Poetry: Modernism and After" fill my bookshelves. I eat this stuff up. But one thing a lot of poetry books do is mush up the sense of it all in the hope of appealing to the academics. Since most regularly published poets are professors in English departments, it works out, but it creates a great divide between the laity and the academic.

What David Perkins has done is explain the basic chronology of poets periods. This is neither an encyclopedia of terms nor an anthology of great poems. Instead, Perkins takes a period, affiliates the poets major within that period and explains their context and importance.

He keeps it simple without talking down to the reader.

Essentially, it is a collection of intelligent essays. Some are topical, like "The Postwar Period" while others are poet-specific, like "W. H. Auden."

Perkins writes clearly. It isn't trying to impress you, but he is trying to help you understand Eliot and onward.

I read it for personal growth, but it would make a solid textbook, in tandem with Perkins' other volume covering the previous eras.

I fully recommend "History of Modern Poetry: Modernism and After" by David Perkins.

Anthony Trendl

excellent introduction to modern poetry
David Perkins's "History of Modern Poetry" gives the reader the essentials of the modernist movement, from its beginnings as a reaction against the outworn Romantic era to the poetry of Ashbery, Ammons, and Merrill in our own age. Brevity is a virtue here: Perkins states the essentials of a poet's life only and so escapes the common error of overinterpretation which most critics commit. The series also pays attention to minor poets who do not rank highly today and past movements in journals and anthology editing so as to provide us with a complete picture of what the past century of poetry has consisted. Highly recommended.

A Must Have for Serious Readers of Poetry
This book (the first volume) is over 600 pages. And they are 600 pages chock full of intelligent analyses and overviews of all the poetic schools in Britian and the US since the 1890s. This book is fascinating in its content and a joy to read because of Perkins' clear and humane style. It is amazing that one person can know so much. But don't let that intimidate you. This book will do wonders for your working knowledge of American and British poetry.
